Style Guide

How We Made It

The Global Press Style Guide is a living document that sets the standard for dignified and precise vocabulary when referring to people and places covered by Global Press reporters. It ensures respectful, accurate, and bias-free storytelling by providing journalists with clear rules and rationale for word choices—promoting clarity, equity, and professionalism in coverage of the world’s least-covered places.

In 2022, I led the development of a digital Style Guide, transforming it from a static document into an interactive, multilingual, AI-powered database, searchable and accessible to publication partners worldwide. As product manager, product designer, and project manager, I oversaw every stage—from concept to launch—ensuring the tool was both highly functional and easy to use. I collaborated with Global Press Product Developer Andy Neale to create and manage the database using Algolia.

I also worked with our in-house illustrator, Matt Haney, to commission a series of original illustrations from artists within the communities we cover, pairing each entry with artwork that humanized and contextualized the language. The redesigned Style Guide reached a broader global audience, saw a significant increase in traffic, and was adopted by numerous publications and institutions worldwide, including Duke University’s student newspaper.
